Aim-, ASX and TSX-listed Allied Gold plans to award the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the refurbishment and expansion of its Gold Ridge project on the Solomon Islands to GR Engineering Services.Allied Gold CEO and executive chairperson Mark Caruso said that the awarding of the EPC contract is a further indication that Allied Gold was accelerating the programme for redevelopment of the Gold Ridge project, with further contracts scheduled to be negotiated and awarded over the coming month.

Gold One outlines potential for new Gauteng gold resuscitation

The JSE- and ASX-listed gold junior Gold One said on Wednesday that it had secured additional prospecting rights in Gauteng province’s East Rand Basin, 30 km from Johannesburg, where there were gold-mining resuscitation opportunities.Gold One CEO Neal Froneman told the Citi Global Resources Conference in London that the contiguous prospecting rights over 16 000 ha had an inferred resource of 5,2-million ounces of gold at a grade of 3,39 g/t and was separated from the East Rand and Central Rand water basin, where mining had to be accompanied by costly water pumping.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold is close to reaching an agreement with the Democratic Congo government that would allow it to expand its huge copper/cobalt mine in the central African nation, its chief executive said on Tuesday."The government has been realigned within the last month … and there are positive indications that we are within sight of having a conclusion to this process," Richard Adkerson told the Reuters Global Mining and Steel Summit here.

Gold production from West Africa is set to rise about 30% over the next 4 years, driven largely by higher output from Randgold and Iamgold, a top executive of metals consultancy GFMS said on Tuesday."In West Africa gold mine production is growing, the figures are obviously a lot smaller there, as it is a smaller sector," Managing Director Paul Burton told an event hosted by MineAfrica — a group that promotes mining investment in Africa.

Gold steadied on Wednesday after the euro bounced slightly higher against the US dollar though weaker oil prices could prompt new selling, traders said.Dealers noted early bargain hunting from Chinese speculators but gold prices were susceptible to sharp movements due to low volumes. Platinum and palladium slipped in early trade but held near recent highs.

Canada’s Terrane plans to spin-off Berg project

Canadian exploration company Terrane Metals Corp is focusing on becoming a junior gold producer and plans to spin-off its Berg copper-molybdenum project, Chief Executive Rob Pease said on Monday."We are going to try and position Terrane as a gold company, as gold companies get premiums in the market," said Pease, while speaking along the sidelines of the PDAC mining convention in Toronto.

Investors will become increasingly comfortable with mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has the potential to become the largest gold producer in Africa, Banro Corp chairperson Simon Village said on Tuesday.“I believe the DRC, when we sit down here in ten years time,will be as acceptable as an investment destination as Ghana and Tanzania are today,” he said at a Toronto event hosted by the Canada-South African Chamber of Commerce.
