South Africa-based Waterpan Mining Company (WMC), along with unnamed investors, aims to bid for a controlling stake in First Uranium if shareholders vote down two proposed deals to sell its main assets at June 13 meetings, director Chopper van der Bijl said on Friday.Cash-strapped First Uranium had last month snubbed a potential $80-million offer from a consortium comprising Russia’s Renova group and WMC for the Toronto- and Johannesburg-based company’s Ezulwini gold and uranium mine, located west of the city.

Silvercorp net earnings fall on higher production costs

TSX-listed Silvercorp Metals on Thursday said fourth-quarter profit fell by 19% to $9.7-million quarter-on-quarter, or 6c a share, weighed down by increased production costs despite higher prices achieved.The lower net income was mainly attributable to a charge of $1.5-million of forensic audit and legal fees to fight a short-sellers’ attack, higher production costs, partially offset by higher sales revenue, and higher general and administrative costs as the company had three projects under development, compared with only one last year.

Scorched Canadian Malartic mill returns to operation

TSX-listed Osisko’s burnt mill at its Canadian Malartic gold mine had been returned to operations, except for the No 4 cyclone set, which was expected to be back on line within a week.“The mill had been returned to operational status as of 22:00 on Wednesday evening,” VP for corporate development John Burzynski said in a statement.

Mali interim govt raises gold sales tax

Mali’s interim government has raised the combined sales tax on gold by 2 percentage points to 8%, a move aimed at bringing it in line with peers in the West Africa region, according to a government statement.The tax hike came as a senior mines ministry official said Mali will miss its 2012 output target of just over 49 t. The official said it was too early to give a new figure.

Hannans takes control of Scandinavian Resources

Gold and base metals explorer Hannans Reward has taken a 92.9% interest in takeover target Scandinavian Resources, triggering a compulsory acquisition of the remaining shares in the ASX-listed Scandinavian.Hannans launched its share swap offer in early March this year, offering three of its own shares for every one Scandinavian share held, valuing the takeover target at A$32-million.
