    State-run Steel Authority of India Ltd and government-controlled Hindustan Copper Ltd are in talks with India’s Aditya Birla Group and Jindal Steel and Power Ltd to form a consortium to bid for gold and copper deposits in Afghanistan, the Mint newspaper reported.Afghanistan has invited expressions of interest by March 9 for gold and copper deposits in four provinces.

    Kilo Goldmines, which Afghanistan’s Ministry of Mines named as a preferred bidder to develop part of the massive Hajigak iron-ore deposit, could conclude talks with the government over a mining right for the project by mid-year, CEO Alex van Hoeken said.The portion of the deposit that Kilo successfully bid for is known as Block A, and contains a historical – though not NI 43 101-compliant – resource of around 450-million tons grading at around 62%, he said in an interview on Wednesday.

    Canada’s New Gold said it expected to lift output of the precious metal by around one-tenth to between 405 000 oz and 445 000 oz in 2012, with its New Afton mine in British Columbia set to start producing in June.The company, which owns mines in the US, Mexico and Australia, forecast total cash costs for the year, net of by-product sales, of between $410/oz and $430/oz, lower than the $448/oz figure it posted for 2011.
